Statistically Valid Inferences from Privacy-Protected Data

چکیده
Unprecedented quantities of data that could help social scientists understand and ameliorate the challenges human society are presently locked away inside companies, governments, other organizations, in part because privacy concerns. We address this problem with a general-purpose access analysis system mathematical guarantees for research subjects, statistical validity researchers seeking science insights. build on standard “differential privacy,” correct biases induced by privacy-preserving procedures, provide proper accounting uncertainty, impose minimal constraints choice methods estimated. illustrate replicating key analyses from two recent published articles show how we can obtain approximately same substantive results while simultaneously protecting privacy. Our approach is simple to use computationally efficient; also offer open-source software implements all our methods.

Valid inferences from invalid tests?
I read with interest the remarks of Reuben J. Silver, which were published in the November 2001 issue of the American Psychologist on the occasion of his receiving the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice. Silver took the opportunity to delineate his approach to the practice of professional psychology. He described a perspective that combines an...
متن کاملWhen Are Inferences from Multiple Imputation Valid?
Multiple imputation, as described by Rubin, has seen a wide variety of applications. Counterexamples, presented by Fay (1991), and new methods, such as those of J.N.K. Rao and J. Shao, that can asymptotically disagree with the multiple imputation approach, have raised questions about the validity of multiple imputation. This paper identifies critical restrictions on the practical application of...
متن کاملA statistically valid alternative to the TDT.
OBJECTIVE To present an alternative linkage test to the transmission/disequilibrium test (TDT) which is conservative under the null hypothesis and generally more powerful under alternatives. METHODS The exact distribution of the TDT is examined under both the null hypothesis and relevant alternatives. The TDT is rewritten in an alternate form based on the contributions from each of the three ...
متن کاملComparison of sevoflurane with halothane: statistically valid?
Sir,—I read with interest the article by Taivainen and colleagues [1] comparing the effects of sevoflurane and halothane on the quality of anaesthesia and serum glutathione transferase alpha and fluoride in paediatric patients. The authors mentioned the use of the Student's t test or Fisher's exact test for intergroup comparisons of anaesthesia data. They also mentioned the use of analysis of v...
متن کاملIn Search of a Statistically Valid Volatility Risk Factor (revised)
Theory predicts that aggregate volatility ought to be a priced risk factor. In an influential study with more than 1000 citations on Google Scholar, Ang, Hodrick, Xing, and Zhang (2006) propose an ex post factor, FV IX, intended as a proxy for aggregate volatility risk. Their test validating FV IX relies on an OLS regression of portfolio excess returns on FV IX and other independent variables o...
